How Corporate Travel Is Rescuing the SAF Market

Sustainable aviation fuel is no longer just a boardroom talking point or a niche experiment. A recent report from American Express Global Business Travel suggests corporate buyers could ignite half of the world's SAF demand by 2030. This shift moves the needle from a supply struggle to a massive demand-side opportunity.

While production has surged since 2021, the fuel still accounted for less than 1 percent of total consumption last year. The problem remains a stubborn mix of high costs and scarce physical supply at local airports. Airlines are making multibillion-gallon promises, but the price tag for green fuel stays significantly higher than traditional kerosene.

Enter the book-and-claim model, a clever workaround for the logistics of air travel. Companies finance fuel production at major hubs and receive credits for the emissions saved, even if their staff is flying from a smaller regional terminal. This allows brands to slash their carbon footprints without waiting for a physical pipe to be built in every city.

Industry heavyweights are already leaning into this virtual supply chain. Airbus launched a registry pilot last year to help leasing firms and private operators track these credits with precision. Meanwhile, travel managers are beginning to see SAF options appear directly in their booking tools, turning abstract climate goals into a simple click at checkout.

The momentum is undeniable, yet the final hurdle remains one of red tape rather than chemistry. United Airlines has secured nearly three billion gallons in commitments, but the market still craves uniform reporting standards. Without a global consensus on how these purchases count toward climate targets, the corporate surge could hit a regulatory ceiling just as it gains speed.
